California State University, Fullerton
Student Recreation Center Feasibility Study and Referendum Support
Brailsford & Dunlavey
was retained by California State University,
Fullerton in 1999 to provide professional
consulting services for a proposed new
recreation center on the University's main
campus. At the time, the University had grown
to more than 25,000 students and shared a
Physical Education Building with Academics and
Athletics.
B&D's services included a detailed market analysis, interviewing building users, defining outline program requirements, projecting acceptable fee levels, developing a financial analysis, and providing comprehensive referendum services. Based on that information, B&D recommended that the University move forward with initiating a student referendum to pay for a proposed new center, even though a similar referendum had failed a few years prior.
However, this time the students overwhelmingly voted to raise their fees $20 a semester, and then $50 when the building was completed, to support a new facility.
On July 20, 2006, the University broke ground on the new $40 million, 95,000 square foot Student Recreation Center. In May, 2007, the Center was awarded "Best Overall Sustainable Design" as part of the 2007 Best Practice Awards for the University of California / California State University Energy Efficiency Partnership Program.
And on March 12, 2008, the Student Recreation Center opened. The facility received an Architectural Showcase award from Athletic Business magazine in 2009. It also became the first LEED Gold student recreation center in California.
