Residence Hall Programming

Columbus, Ohio

In April 2007, Brailsford & Dunlavey, as a member of the Moody Nolan design team, was selected by Ohio Dominican University to plan and design a new residence hall on the Sunbury Road campus. B&D's responsibilities included conducting a preliminary analysis to determine the appropriate components and unit types for the facility. The preliminary analysis included a strategic visioning session with the University, student focus groups, and preliminary demographic analysis. A Program of Architectural Requirements was generated from that analysis, as well as from the professional experience of B&D and the University staff involved with the project.

In response to the University's strategic plan and enrollment goals, it was determined that new student housing would be designed for freshman students and would offer amenities to support community development. The site for this new housing would create the fourth side to the existing residential quadrangle. It was envisioned that this facility would serve as a recruitment and retention tool for the University as it embarked on a new enrollment management strategy.

The new residence hall temporarily would provide housing for upper-class students. Once new upper-class residence halls are developed on the west campus, the new residence hall would assume its ultimate role of providing an attractive suite-style option for the growing freshman population. Aquinas and Sienna then would be available to support sophomores and juniors in smaller suite-style units, with juniors and seniors moving to single suites and apartment-style units on the west campus.

Discussions with University staff regarding the appropriate unit type for the new facility resulted in a recommendation for high-density, suite-style units intended to serve freshmen, though with amenities to support the growing demand for upper-class accommodations until more appropriate housing could be developed on the west campus.

The new 150-bed Lynam Hall opened in August 2008.
