Kimball Union Academy
Administrative Space Needs Analysis
In the summer of 2004, Brailsford & Dunlavey was contracted by Kimball Union Academy to conduct a space needs analysis in conjunction with the campus master planning effort of the Office of Michael Rosenfeld, Inc., Architects. The space needs analysis included studies of existing campus facilities and usage, benchmarking of comparable institutions, and recommendations for accommodating campus growth. The goal of the analysis was to develop a comprehensive list of needed spaces that would serve as the foundation for the master planning process and future building designs.
B&D's work included analyzing
existing facilities, reviewing previous
documentation, reviewing and analyzing
facilities at comparable schools, and analyzing
schedule and classroom utilization. The
specific spaces that were included in the study
were academic classrooms, science labs,
performing and visual arts, athletics and
recreation, library services, campus housing,
dining services, department offices, and
administrative offices. B&D coordinated
with the faculty and staff throughout the
process to understand the unique challenges
facing Kimball Union.
B&D's analysis demonstrated that many of the Academy's existing facilities were not meeting their imperative of "creating the ideal environment for learning," as cited in the Academy's Strategic Plan. B&D recommended that an additional 53,300 net square feet of program space be added to the campus through the master planning process; approximately 22,500 net square feet of the total space needed would be devoted to athletics and recreation. The analysis also outlined the shortfall of on-campus administrative space and provided the Academy with an ideal program list specific to their needs.
B&D's report was well-received among faculty and staff, prompting the Academy to consider pursuing capital sources for new construction.
