Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation
Community Recreation Preliminary Assessment and Design Review
In 2006, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation (BBPDC) was redeveloping an 85-acre parcel of land along 1.3 miles of Brooklyn, New York's waterfront. James Carpenter Design Associates had been charged with designing an indoor soccer-specific facility at Pier 5 as one of the key programmatic and visual elements of the park. In June 2006, James Carpenter Design Associates engaged Brailsford & Dunlavey to perform a preliminary assessment and design review of the project to ensure its successful implementation.
B&D's responsibilities included a working session with James Carpenter Design Associates that detailed proper field orientation and size, playing surface, and support spaces. B&D also applied its industry expertise to present potential alternate uses for the indoor facility, such as community events, other recreational sports, and high school sports.
B&D's main deliverable was a Recommendation Memo that aided the BBPDC as it moved forward with the project. The final recommended facility was an indoor soccer facility, which would accommodate three full-size indoor fields and would utilize synthetic turf to ensure maximum playability and flexibility.
The Pier 5 Soccer Hall was completed in 2009 and serves the community year-round through sports and multipurpose events.
