District of Columbia Jewish Community Center
Community Center Program Management
To
create a new center for its expanding range of
activities, the District of Columbia Jewish
Community Center undertook a highly challenging
construction project: the $13.5 million
renovation of the historic Jewish Community
Center building at 16th and Q streets in
downtown Washington, DC. This structure, the
home of the original DCJCC (before it became
the Greater Washington JCC and moved to
Rockville, MD), was completely "gutted," and
new facilities were constructed within,
including athletic courts, a swimming pool,
fitness and training spaces, a 260-seat
theater, an art gallery, a social hall,
classrooms, child care facilities, and
administrative offices.
Brailsford & Dunlavey served as program manager for the DCJCC, representing the owner's interests in day-to-day coordination of the architect (Ayers/Saint/Gross of Baltimore), general contractor (SIGAL of Washington, DC), and consultants and suppliers, as well as taking responsibility for managing and reporting on project schedule and budget. B&D developed customized financial management and reporting systems suited to the DCJCC's internal reporting needs and tracked all expenditures, commitments, buy-outs, and change orders on a weekly basis. An on-site program manager provided daily coordination between the different members of the design and construction teams and resolved technical and logistic complications as they arose.
The project was completed in January 1998.
